You know, all I actually remember from my childhood is the abuse. The only good times I remember was either when I was in school away from home or at a friends place or when I first met my husband when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Yes, for real, we met each other when we were kids.
Oh goodness, I still remember the day I met Radek as if it were yesterday. He made me laugh a lot and still does till this day. We grew up together; definitely lots of sleepovers, building of forts, playing Power Rangers, watching movies, etc. We even went on vacation together to Vancouver Island. That was by far the best vacation I had ever had. My mum didn’t end up coming which for me was a nice change. We ended up taking two vehicles. Radek, his cousin’s Marta and Tomek, and his aunt and uncle in their van, and his mum with my uncle and aunt in their vehicle.
I believe the route we took was through Rycroft, AB turning right to head west in British Columbia and drove through a place called Dawson’s Creek (I do not think it was based on the TV show but it’s a real place), and from there on we headed south. Another major stop on our trip was hitting up Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Valley. It is completely spectacular and I swear anyone and everyone needs to go here at least once in their life. Just breathtaking. Once you hit Vancouver and area, to get to the island, you need to get on a ferry. There are a few different ports to choose from depending where on the island you want to go and which port there is closer to your destination. Our destination at the time was Victoria since my uncle owned a very lovely place there and big enough for all of us coming.
Taking BC Ferries is really cool too. It is usually about a two hour ride. Vehicles are left on the lower decks and you can go up to the upper decks where they have seating areas, both inside and outside. They also have a souvenir shop, washrooms, and a cafeteria, and they even have a mini arcade on there now; I just don’t remember them having one back in the early to mid 90’s. Regardless, really an amazing experience. I remember seeing whales breaching during one of the rides.
Oh the Island life… What I would do to move to Vancouver Island. It is absolutely stunning and such a relaxed, calm environment. Everyone is super friendly, and there is a TON to do everywhere. I remember we went to this dock area and we got a chance to feed seals. Also there is this other docking area for boats which is actually in front of the Empress Hotel in Victoria, where we went and had caricatures done of us, and we still have them; I need to get ours framed eventually here.
The amount of activities on the island are endless. There is also the Butchart Gardens which is incredible and just beautiful. It is a HUGE floral display of gardens that is a top tourist attraction and a national historical site. You walk through different types of gardens filled with flowers and plants and trees that you would probably never see here. There are shops and a restaurant but the walk through is by far the best part.
I also remember hitting up a museum, I just do not recall the name of it or what it was about. Some things are pretty vague. There was also a massive butterfly garden though and I remember that being really neat. (I think it is in the same location or around the same location as the Butchart Gardens.)
We had a ton of fun. At the ages of 31 and 33, we still have fun. I knew at a young age that I would marry Radek and I am so glad I did. Don’t get ne wrong, there are times when I want to strangle and kill him but I love him more than anything and fall in love with him on a daily basis. We don’t fight. We don’t argue. With us, everything is out on the table and there are no secrets. We communicate a lot and I think that is what makes us work so well.
Stay tuned, there is always more to come. I am going to blog more sporadically on this series just to keep you all interested and for you to come back and keep on reading. Have a good Monday evening.
